Shopping Trolleys Code - NSW

The Management of Shopping Trolleys Code of Practice - NSW

Shopping trolleys provide an essential service for hundreds of thousands of customers every day in shops and shopping centres throughout NSW. Retailers who provide shopping trolleys for their customers have many millions of dollars invested in the provision of trolley services, in maintenance, replacement and upgrading of trolleys, and in the collection and return of trolleys to stores for use by other customers.

Residents, Councils and Retailers working together towards a cleaner environment - that's the aim of the Code of Practice for the Management of Shopping Trolleys was launched on Monday 23rd August 2004 by the Minister for Local Government, Tony Kelly.

Mr Kelly said the Code acknowledged the need for responsible behaviour from all sectors of the community if shopping trolleys are to remain useful tools of the retail trade without becoming visual pollution.

'Many people have probably never given any thought to the effects abandoning a shopping trolley might have; the cost which is added to the price of groceries, the illegal nature of their action, the damage to the environment should the trolley find its way into a river, lake or sea and so on' warned Mr Kelly.
