The launch of the Radio Frequency Identification 'RFID' in Retail Consumer Privacy Code of Practice demonstrates the pioneering collaboration between retailers, suppliers, consumers and the technology industry.
In a world's first, the code provides guidelines for the use of RFID in retail and dispute settling procedures for consumers.
'The RFID Retail Consumer Code aims to alleviate the privacy concerns of some community members who may purchase items from stores utilizing the new technology' said Mr. Lonie, spokesperson for the Australian Retailers Association.
'Through providing guidelines for the use and deactivation of the technology we are able to assist consumers and retailers alike in utilizing the technology,' said Mr. Lonie.
'The code demonstrates the commitment of the retail industry in ensuring consumer privacy concerns are effectively resolved through an appropriate dispute handling procedure' said Mr. Lonie.
'The launch of this code comes after years of consultation with parties such as the ARA, CHOICE and GS1,' said Mr. Lonie, 'and it demonstrates the pioneering nature of Australian retailing in providing measures prior to widespread uptake of the technology'.
The technology is already used by many retailers and has ample benefits for retail supply chain management but widespread uptake of the technology is not foreseeable in the too near future.
RFID may be utilized in replacement of less efficient barcode scanning systems. The technology allows more efficient supply chain tracking between suppliers and retailers but given the implementation costs it is currently not a luxury borne to all.
